WHATS THE TEAM LIKE

The Legal Team is currently comprised of three lawyers, each of whom have primary responsibility for specific portfolios within the organization, but support each other by lending their experience and assistance to each other, ensuring the best results for the team and the organization. We seek to be pragmatic, principled, and collaborative; the team has established itself as trusted advisors within the organization.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Provide timely, accurate, and comprehensive legal support to all levels of the organization to enable sound contracting and business decisions, claims management, and risk mitigation.
  • Deliver advice, interpretation, and recommendations on legislation, policy, corporate priorities, and emerging issues to support operational execution.
  • Assist in preparation and negotiation of legal agreements, including procurement contracts (particularly construction and IT) and leases and other revenue agreements, .
  • Provide legal guidance for business units which may include advice related to procurement issues and commercial agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable statutes, regulations, and agreements through proactive monitoring and guidance.
  • Monitor and assess emerging legal developments, communicating potential impacts to inform organizational decision-making. 
  • Independently manage and resolve complex legal matters through rigorous analysis and strategic judgment.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING

  • Minimum of 8 years of legal experience gained through a combination of private practice and in-house corporate counsel roles with a general commercial/corporate legal background.
  • Bachelor of Laws Degree and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in procurement contracting, including drafting, negotiating, and advising on complex commercial agreements, with proven experience supporting construction related contracts and Information Technology (IT) contracts, and managing files independently from start to finish.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines while adapting to changing priorities.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant federal and provincial legislation and regulatory frameworks.
  • Commitment to ethical behaviour and organizational values; ability to foster trust and transparency.
  • Proven ability to manage complex commercial legal issues involving multiple areas of law and arrive at a favourable solution.

WHAT ADDITIONAL SKILLS ARE AN ASSET

  • Experience in real property, real estate and leasing is considered an asset.
  • Bilingual in English and French may be an asset.
